Contour Cartoon of Florence Valpredo
by Madison DuVeau Wilmington, NC. USA
Prismacolor pencil on paper. Contour drawing or blind outline
drawing , means drawing the outline of the subject without looking
at the paper. I prefer to slightly stretch the meaning of 'contour'
to include lines generally, so that from time to time the line will
wander across the form and back out again, capturing little details
along the way. I avoid lifting the pencil from the paper as much as
possible. The end result can appear very expressive and cartoon
like. So few lines, so much said here. Madison Duveau

What's hanging this month? Here are some of Friday's
highlights:
'From the Ground Up,' a
show of paintings, paper collage and sculpture by Clair
Hartmann, Fritzi Huber and Karen Crouch, respectively, opens
Friday at Three Hounds Gallery. With natural materials and
subject matter rooted in earth and sky, these three local
female artists explore the cyclical nature of the world we
live in, with its innate, life-giving magic and charms. It has
been said that 'Nature is the greatest Artist.' The work of
these artists harken back to and interpret that idea, covering
territory 'from the ground up.' A reception will be held at
the Gallery 6-8 p.m. at 29 S. Front St. For more information,
visit www.threehoundsgallery.com or call 815-3330.
'New Faces/Familiar Faces,'
opens Friday at New Elements Gallery. It's a showcase sampler
of work from the staple artists represented by the gallery,
including Betty Brown, Kyle Highsmith, Robert Irwin, Valerie
Lennon and Ann McCray and the recently acquired artists we can
look forward to seeing more of, such as Nicholas Batounis,
Nancy Carter, Tommy Midyette, and Janet Triplett. New Elements
expands its repertoire with a variety of media - sculpture,
crafts, painting styles from impressionistic landscapes,
buttery still-lives and graphic architecture. A reception will
be held at the gallery 6-9 p.m. at 216 N. Front St. Visit www.newelementsgallery.com
for details.
'Summer's Edge,' a
selection of watercolors by Mary Ellen Golden and Rovinato
images by John W. Golden, offers a special bonus for one
observant gallery goer. The Golden Gallery is celebrating 31
years of business in the Cotton Exchange and also some
national attention for photographer John W. Golden. Mary Ellen
promises a free print of John's to the first person to bring a
copy of the national publication currently featuring his
images. A reception for the show will be 6-9 p.m. Friday at
311 N. Front St.
